Happy National Counselors Week! Aaron French is celebrating his fourth year as the school counselor at Archer Learning Center. Graduation night is one Aaron's favorite memories as a school counselor. Prior to joining Turnbow Elementary as the school counselor six years ago, Sarah Gheen was with Ozark Guidance as a school based mental health therapist. After switching over to the school side of counseling, Sarah says, "My favorite part of being a school counselor are the hugs I get from the children everyday all day long!" LeighAnne Mckee and Emma Davis both agree that relationships are the most important thing with it comes to being counselors. LeighAnne has been a counselor since Hellstern Middle opened in 2005 and this is Emma's first year. Emma says, "Students go through so much in middle school that they don't understand." Catie Jenkins has been the school counselor at Shaw Elementary School for five years. To ensure long term success for students, Catie says that her favorite part about being a counselor is "working with parents and teachers to give students the tools they need to be successful that will carry through childhood and as they become adults." Catie Kilpatrick, the school counselor at Elmdale Elementary, is celebrating her first ever National Counselors Week. This school year is Catie's first year as a school counselor and she has started a "Connection Corner" video series at Elmdale. She says, "Connection Corners are weekly videos about social emotional learning where students learning about different skills. It has been so fun to see how much the students enjoy them and how much it has impacted them." Great counselors help make Springdale Public Schools #THEChoice.


This week is National School Counseling Week! Sierra Engelmann is celebrating her 13th year as a school counselor at Monitor Elementary. She says, "When you work with elementary students, you are able to see your work. When I go into classroom, I see students practicing kindness and other things we have discussed. During National Counselor's Week the Springdale School District salutes Lisa Clough of George Elementary. She is in her 14th year at the school after teaching 18 years at Smith Elementary. Her favorite aspect of her job is "making kids happy. I like helping them with their challenges and teaching them how they can learn from those challenges. I like guidance lessons." When students at Shaw Elementary realized that they didn't know much anout their ancestry, they created World Fest! Students picked a country that was represented in their school and shared the findings with friends and family at the EAST Night Out event. Students invited guest speakers to share more about their cultures and traditions. The World Fest was entirely student led! #THEChoice





Shaw Elementary hosted their annual EAST Night Out. Students invited their friends, family, and community to learn and interact with their EAST projects! Students identified something that could be improved in their school or community and developed a solution. #THEChoice




Future Art educators from the University of Arkansas have partnered up with students from Sonora Middle School. Through this program, art students will visit with Sonora students weekly and work on teaching new art techniques and creating artwork. To kick off their program, mixed media artist Santa Barraza, shared her work and experiences to inspire all students. #THEChoice





Six students and their teachers from Smith Elementary had a very special morning at Barnes and Noble! Each person was treated to hot cocoa and free books as a reward for completing their Christmas reading log. Afterwards, they had lunch courtesy of Chik-Fil-A! #THEChoice





Springdale has long been a state and district leader in music education. The 2019-2020 results are in and Springdale again is setting the pace. Springdale's junior highs -- Southwest, Central, Lakeside and George -- had 165 all-region choir selections and 177 all-region band students. No other district was even close to those numbers. Springdale's high schools -- Springdale, Har-Ber and the Don Tyson School of Innovation -- had 121 students named all-region in choir and 142 selected as all-region in band. Again, no other district was close. In addition, Springdale's high schools had 74 students named all-state in choir and 56 students selected as all-state in band, tops in Arkansas. Congratulations to all of the district band programs! Excellence in music education is another reason Springdale Public Schools are #THEChoice.



Girls at J.O. Kelly Middle School are learning how to Dream BIG! 34 students are paired up with a mentor from the University of Arkansas through the Dream BIG (Believing in Girls) program. Representative Megan Godfrey visited with the Dream BIG program to talk about civic engagement, how girls can find issues that they are passionate about, and how to advocate for them. #THEChoice

To celebrate Martin Luther King Junior Day, raised garden beds were rebuilt at Childers Knapp Elementary by volunteers from FoodCorps, Apple Seeds, and the University of Arkansas. The service day project was made possible by a grant from EngageAR. #THEChoice





Students from Central Junior High School celebrated a Martin Luther King Service Learning Day by visiting the Feed 479/ Northwest Arkansas Compassion Center to help stock and clean the food pantry. #THEChoice
