Charlie Whorton of Don Tyson School of Innovation shot a 76 and a 77 for a total of 153 to take first place Sept. 26-27 at the 6A Girls Golf State Tournament at Springdale Country Club. Whorton competed with the Har-Ber High School team at the event.
Dr. Jared Cleveland, Springdale Public Schools superintendent, said our community partners do a great job of welcoming the thousands of attendees from across our state to the community of Springdale.
"Community partners such as the Springdale Country Club are instrumental in providing a safe and competitive venue for students to play and grow as athletes," Cleveland said. "We're grateful for how widely the club opened its doors for our student-athletes."Chris Wood, district athletic director, thanked the club's members and staff for hosting the tournament and for their hospitality to Springdale's athletes, as well as those visiting the region from throughout the state.
"Casey Wroot and his staff went over the top to make sure the teams and spectators needs were met and the course was in excellent condition," Wood said. "Thanks to Andy Thompson and his crew."
Brian Shinall and Wienerschnitzel donated meals for the players and volunteers Sept. 25, he said, and Knight Weis and Signature Bank provided free meals for players, spectators, volunteers, staff and anyone on the grounds Sept. 26-27.
"Jan Haney and the ladies of the SCC Women’s Golf Association turned their locker room into a players lounge," Wood said. "From the looks on those young ladies' faces and the comments we heard from coaches and players alike, it was very appreciated."
Wood had a list of other people who helped make the tournament possible:
• Former district coaches Roger Voss and Greg Holiman provided structure on each side as rules officials
• Clark Greenhaw had monitors with each group
• Bill Rogers, Mike McFarland and Jimmy Dykes announced the players off their first tee
• Sean Huggins and Jack Burson made sure all the athletes had a chance to warm up properly before their round on the range
• Ron Hudson and Perry Webb shuttled players from one side to the other
• Mike Lawson came up with an excellent goody bag for each coach and participant and made sure the scores were correct before being officially recorded and posted.
"It was a tremendous undertaking, and we again want to thank SCC, its members and all the volunteers who worked behind the scenes," Wood said.
