Lee Elementary's Justin Swope has been named Arkansas Elementary Principal of the Year by the Arkansas Association of Elementary School Principals. Surprised by the reception he received when he drove into the school parking lot, Swope could say only, "I have no words." In his ninth year as Lee principal, Swope later said, "This is about our school, the kids who work hard and grow and the teachers that believe in them. Our district, including Dr. (Superintendent Jim) Rollins, the administrative staff and the school board, set the conditions for great things to happen." A graduate of the University of Central Arkansas, Swope earned his master's and specialist's degrees from the University of Arkansas. He taught in Elkins five years before being elevated to elementary school principal. Her served in that position for four years before becoming assistant principal at Jones Elementary in Springdale. It's the Shaw Elementary Amazing Maker Race! Students had five destinations in a scavenger hunt to add items to their Box of Awesome. Those items were to be taken home where students would make something, then display it on social media. First stop was Tontitown Park where students picked up their box that contained two items and a clue to where the next stop was. Hellstern was stop number two and the final spot was Shaw Elementary. Attention 2020 Seniors: With the new information that Alternate Methods of Instruction will be extended through the end of the academic year, Springdale Public Schools has made the decision to allow seniors who are in good standing at the end of the third nine weeks to graduate. Seniors who are not on track to graduate as of the last day of the third nine weeks will be given the opportunity for credit recovery. Any assignments that have been submitted since this date will be used to support or improve a senior's third quarter/semester grade. Seniors who wish to improve grades are encouraged to continue to participate in the AMI process. May 6, 2020 will be the deadline for all senior assignments. Seniors enrolled in college concurrent credit classes must finish that coursework as instructed from the college/university to receive college credit. We will continue to support seniors to improve their grades, in concurrent courses, AP courses, FAFSA scholarships and college admission. The district will continue to evaluate 2020 Commencement Exercises. Due to the impact of COVID-19, Bud Walton Arena is not available. Our alternative graduations and senior celebrations will be combined in order to recognize the outstanding efforts of our seniors. The district has a coordinated plan to pass out caps and gowns and information will soon be available. While proms are amazing events, because of social distancing expectations, proms have been cancelled. The district encourages seniors to remain positive in this never-before-seen situation. You have met this historic challenge head on and will persevere. Your story is unlike any other senior class in the history of Springdale. The senior class of 2020 will never be forgotten. #THEChoice

Shelly Bewley, assistant principal at Shaw Elementary for the past 13 years, has been elevated to the position of principal at the school effective July 1. She replaces Cynthia Voss, who is retiring. "I'm excited for the opportunity to continue to lead this amazing school with a staff that always puts students first," Bewley said. "It will be difficult not working side by side with Mrs. Voss but she is following her plans and dreams of retiring, knowing the school would be in good hands." Voss and Bewley have been together for 20 years. After earning her degree in elementary education from the University of Arkansas, Bewley went through the MAT program and interned at Smith Elementary, where Voss was principal. She was then hired at Smith and served six years, first as a teacher, then an instructional facilitator. When Shaw opened 13 yeas ago Voss was named principal and Bewley was hired as assistant principal. It was a continuation of a lifetime in Springdale for Bewley, who started at Tontitown Elementary, moved to Walker Elementary when it opened, advanced to Southwest Junior High and graduated from Springdale HighSchool. "My roots in Springdale run deep," Bewley said. Superintendent Dr. Jim Rollins noted, "Shelly Bewley is a product of the Springdale system who has done outstanding work as a teacher, instructional facilitator and assistant principal. She is absolutely committed to the team at Shaw Elementary. The great work being done at Shaw is a compliment to Cynthia Voss and Shelly Bewley and their superb leadership. To the Springdale Community, Student and staff health and safety is the number one concern of Springdale Public Schools. Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and Secretary of Education Johnny Key recommend school districts in counties without a presumptive case remain open in order to not disrupt community life, especially meal services for children and health services for all. The CDC guidance on COVID-19 is that short to medium duration school closings are not recommended. The major request is for good judgment be in place for hygiene for all students and staff along with social distancing. Springdale Public Schools will remain open. Springdale has long been a state and district leader in music education. The 2019-2020 results are in and Springdale again is setting the pace. Springdale's junior highs -- Southwest, Central, Lakeside and George -- had 165 all-region choir selections and 177 all-region band students. No other district was even close to those numbers. Springdale's high schools -- Springdale, Har-Ber and the Don Tyson School of Innovation -- had 121 students named all-region in choir and 142 selected as all-region in band. Again, no other district was close. In addition, Springdale's high schools had 74 students named all-state in choir and 56 students selected as all-state in band, tops in Arkansas. Congratulations to all of the district band programs! Excellence in music education is another reason Springdale Public Schools are #THEChoice.

Springdale Har-Ber sophomore Jax Nalley had an idea this past summer. He wanted to unite the district's four high schools (Har-Ber, Springdale, Don Tyson School of Innovation and Archer Learning Center) in an effort to have a voice in the district and the community. He shared his idea with Assistant Superintendent Shannon Tisher, gained the approval of Superintendent Dr. Jim Rollins and began the process. Each school principal chose three representatives and they all meet monthly to make plans. Nalley says, "We wanted student voices to be included in decisions that affect them. We have 31 schools but no unified voice. We believe student voice is important." Dr. Rollins attended the group's first meeting. Meeting number three just took place at Springdale High School. There are no seniors among the selected students so the project will have continuity going into the 2020-2021 academic year. Student voice is another reason Springdale Public Schools are #THEChoice.
